I have added this page to this site because of the increased interest that is being taken in the proposals to reopen the Burscough Curves. The opening picture will give an indication of how things were and the following pictures show how the curves have become gradually disused and how the once extensive sidings and run round facilities have now gone..
For a few years from the mid 1970's to the mid 1980's I lived adjacent to Burscough Bridge Jcn Signal Box and when I was able to find the time photographed the railway scene. I now regret, as every railway photographer regrets, not having taken more photographs at the time. I have also mislaid many slides and if they are found they will be added to this page.
In the time that I lived there I saw plenty of loco action on both passenger and freight.
Classes I have shown on this site are. 08/20/31/40/45/47/56. There was plenty of CL.37 action on the GMC rubbish liners but I have not been able to find where I have filed the slides of them.
I am afraid that the quality of the pics has deteriorated somewhat [just like I have] over the last 25 years or so.
In Jan 1964 the Liverpool - York mail train hauled by 45695 "Minotaur" came to grief at Timperley.
The wooden bodied vehicles were smashed and the incident was attended by breakdown gangs from Edge Hill MPD and Gorton MPD.
It was a very cold day and sleeting, hence the white blobs on the pics, which have faded a bit with the passage of time but in view of the historical importance I think are worth presenting.
